Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
