2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Lukewarm Feedback
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing unveiling last autumn.
Recently, 2K president a key figure updated team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a distinct vision.
The president stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to address player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Hires
This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full message from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our players.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having dedicated the recent years creating and managing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.
The President
Experience of the New Head
The appointee presently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that evolve every session. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, put it on the line, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."
Project Ethos does not have an official debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as development progresses.
