RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
