Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior representative stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
