At least 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
